New Food Bank, Resource Centre & Housing Project

As of October 2, 2024 we are temporarily relocating our Food Bank & Resource Centre to Summerland Alliance Church. In 2021 we purchased a vacant lot next to our partner of 40 years, Summerland United Church. Both properties are being sold to Turning Points Collaborative, an Okanagan-based non-profit Society that will build approximately 60 affordable, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments above a ground floor incorporating a new Food Bank & Resource Centre facility. Turning Points has prepared a series of informational slides which you can view by scrolling down this page.

The Food Bank’s turnkey cost to buy back into the building project will be approximately $1.6 Million. The value of our land is $720,000 and we have already raised just over $300,000. This leaves us with $580,000 still to be raised. We have the financial capacity to purchase 3,650 square feet of empty shell space that we will need in the new building. We will then have approximately two years of demolition and construction to raise the remaining cost of our required improvements. If you can help us with a donation, please click the donate button above. Could you consider (alone or with others) purchasing one or more square feet in the new building at $450.00 each?

This is the planned layout of our new facility. It is not to scale. The facility occupies 4,000 square feet.

Food is received at the loading dock or in the reception area. It is inspected, processed and stored in the warehouse area. Perishable items are stored in one of two coolers or a walk-in freezer. Some food items are stored in the Food Pickup area where clients can select from them.

Regular hampers are Prepared in the warehouse and delivered as needed to the Food Pickup area.

Food Bank clients register at the Reception desk and move through to the Food Pickup area to receive their food.

Clients of the Resource Centre enter at Reception. If they are visiting with a social service agency counsellor, they will be directed to one of three shared offices. They may also request to use the Kitchen, Laundry, Washroom or Shower facilities and eat their food or access computer workstations in the Dining / Drop-in area.
